These Spring Poem of the Week Boom Cards are great for shared reading and modeling. If you need a tool to help your students develop reading skills, I promise this will be a game changer for you. These short and easy to read poems can be extremely helpful with connecting voice to print, working on beginning sounds, identifying words in text, building high frequency word fluency, and identifying words in isolation.
When Poem of the Week is introduced, we present each line with pictures because it helps the student to memorize the poem. This leads to the connection of voice to print. Memorization is very important PRIOR to independent work. Through repeated modeling and practice with familiar texts, students begin to connect letter sounds to symbols and to recognize familiar high frequency words. This resource is just what you need for students to review and practice on their own. With audio links throughout, students get the support needed to be successful with reading the poems and performing the tasks included. With repeated use, the students will become very familiar with the poems and perfect tracking and identification of words in isolation.
Each poem is presented one line at a time (in story book form). Then, all pages are included on one slide with discussion questions and opportunity for rereading. Finally, the poems are presented with touch points for review and word identification in context and with an illustration for a final read. There are 12 spring poems all together.
130 SLIDES IN ALL WITH VOICE FILES INCLUDED
Prek-K classrooms often teach in themes. My hope is that you can work these into the spring themes you are teaching. Remember, the poems can be projected on your Smartboards too. Use them in whole group, small group, in pairs, or individually. I typically use one poem for each week, but pace according to your students’ needs. Repetition is the key to developing a concept of print, so practice daily is important. Get the printable version for additional practice options.
