Description

These nursery rhyme activities are so helpful for introducing rhyme, beginning sounds, and so many other early reader skills. This bundle includes 12 nursery rhyme sets formatted for working on building a concept of print. With each set, students work on accurate tracking, beginning sounds recognition, sight words, rhyming, reading white space, and punctuation.

HOW PREK-FIRST GRADE TEACHERS CAN USE THESE NURSERY RHYME ACTIVITIES:

Each of the nursery rhymes are set up like the preview. You get it in color and black and white on a single page, on separate pages for instruction, with and without touchpoints on sentence strips for modeling and practice, on word cards for pocket charts, and in book form.

When I use them, I begin by teaching the nursery rhyme for memorization. I project them on a Smartboard and model whole group. Then, in small group, we practice with touchpoints initially and gradually move to independently “reading”. If your students are able to accurately track the print, they are on their way to reading. You can use the word cards with pocket charts to arrange the sentences.

In small group, I play games such as I spy to find letters with the sound ???, find sight words, find words that rhyme with ??? We also deconstruct and reconstruct sentences to demonstrate white space. You can work on identifying words in isolation as well. The key is making concept of word activities part of your routine. Over time, you’ll be amazed at how quickly your kids are reading.

WHAT IS INCLUDED WITH THE NURSERY RHYME ACTIVITIES:

  • Teaching Posters-One sentence per page..great for projecting
  • Touchpoint Grids for students to practice matching spoken word to text.
  • Sentence Strips-Each poem comes on sentence strips with and without touchpoints for scaffolding.
  • Word Cards-Mix and fix cards for sentence creation.
  • Book Form-Use the pictures to teach the poem. Then, practice it in book form. For advanced students, use it for reading.
  • Vocabulary Word Cards-Match text, identify rhyme, or practice decoding.
  • Page form-Collect these in poetry folders for your students to reread after they’ve been taught. At the end of the year, your students will have a great keepsake for summer reading too.

HOW TO USE THE NURSERY RHYME ACTIVITIES:

  1. The teachers models with a projection of the teaching posters on a Smartboard.
  2. Once students have memorized the poem, they continue working on tracking and reading the poem.
  3. In small groups, practice words in isolation, constructing sentences, identifying sight words and beginning sounds, rhyming words, reading punctuation, tracking, and matching print.
  4. Move it to a literacy station for those who are ready to practice on their own or with an assistant.

MORE ABOUT THIS BUNDLE:

Prek-K classrooms often teach in themes. My hope is that you can work them into the themes you are teaching. Remember, the poems can be projected on your Smartboards or printed for students to handle. Use them in whole group, small group, in pairs, or individually. I typically use one poem for each week, but pace according to your students’ needs. Repetition is the key to developing COW, so practice daily is important. Pull out your favorite pointers, and let your kids be teacher for the day.
