Did you know this is National Fire Prevention Week? I thought today, I’d share a collection of fun fire safety teaching ideas you might use as you plan your week. We know how important this topic is for small children who may not know what to do if they experience a fire.
Books you might use for your fire safety unit:
Of course, I have to start with books. With the primary grades, you can not go wrong with Marc Brown’s Arthur books, the Berenstain Bears, or Clifford, but this is also a great time to tie in nonfiction with Gail Gibbon’s Fire book or the Rookie Reader, Fire Safety. Keeping a collection together for students to page through after you’ve shared them is a great way for children to take in the information at their own pace.
As you share these books, working in role playing of what to do if your students hear an alarm or smell smoke in their homes. For most children, this is the first time they’ve learned about fire safety, so helping the kids understand not to be scared of the fireman. I remember going with my daughter’s preschool, and that was one point the firemen shared. Many children are frightened by their protective clothing.

This resource includes task cards with what-if scenarios to discuss with your students. They’re perfect for sparking post reading discussion as well. Print them and keep them near your reading rug or with your book stash.

I love this one pager. It includes key vocabulary which is very helpful for young students. The fact that it’s prepped for digital use is icing on the cake. You can project it and use the color version for group discussion while students use the printable version.

Fire Safety Posters
These five fire safety posters are perfect for modeling what to do in a fire, and I would say are a must print. In fact, you could even send them home for students to post in their houses. Click HERE to download.
