Students can build sight vocabulary for reading automaticity, improve phrasing, and simply have fun. Included in this product are poetry lessons with blackline masters and color clip art as well as printables with vocabulary, discussion questions, word study practice, and visualizing using text evidence for each as well as the Poetry Pros Set for analyzing and teaching poetic devices and for working on comprehension of poetry. Be sure to check out the preview and free sets I’ve shared.
I would suggest that each poem be printed for students to keep in a poetry notebook as you teach, practice reading, and work on supplementary activities. The notebooks keep it all organized and work well for an end of year keepsake. Each poem can also be projected on a Smartboard or Promethean board for text marking and modeling in color. You can glance at the titles for the topics included below. Your students will look forward to these poetry lessons every week!

โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ My Style of Learning says, “I have two students who struggle with reading and I needed something to help them and build their self-esteem, but not require me to go reinvent the wheel either. This was perfect! We do a poem each week. Monday we read through it together after they each do a cold read for me, and highlight our struggling words, then Tuesday-Thursday we do the activities, and Friday they read it once more for me and we chart their improvement. Their self-esteem has grown so much and they love taking them home to read each week.”
โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ Nicole D. says, “I do the poem of the week at the start of each day. My kids have really gotten used to the routine and are now getting more and more into each poem. They are always excited to see who can figure out the rhyming rule first. The word study has also been so beneficial! My students are quickly grasping onto the rules and I can see their learning transfer into their reading in all subjects.”
โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ Patricia H. says, “Great resource use it as a shared reading and talk about the spelling patterns and the vocabulary. After give the student sheet as a review to work on at a center, independent work and sometimes as homework.”
โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ Danielle C. says, “I use these poems every week at the beginning of my groups. We read them each day for fluency practice. The kids love that they are related to the holidays/seasons/time of year. Great tool!!”
