This social emotional learning poetry bundle has 32 original poems and printables focused on comprehension, character building, community building, fluency, and word study. Through group discussion, these poems help teachers work on themes of kindness, respect, sharing, empathy, and so much more.
The poems have been thoughtfully written for students in grades 2-5, and each set is intended to last a week. I suggest pairing the poems with quality literature with similar themes for use during the ELA block, sharing them during a morning meetings, in conjunction with guidance lesson, or during your fluency lessons.
The best use of the poems would include practice with repeated reading, highlighter hunts, phrase marking, and SEL discussions with the printables included. You can share them with whole group for modeling fluency skills, use them as discussion starters, in guided reading groups, for literacy stations, and any time you are waiting (for buses, before lunch, for library, etc). They are also perfect for the beginning of the year as you work on community building too.
