Teaching the narrative elements is a critical skill in studying fictional texts. This narrative elements project helps students use guiding questions as they think about not only what the narrative elements are, but how they contribute to the plot of the book.
When you are working on this skill, you can use the components as part of your small group instruction. I suggest that students respond to the questions as they read with sticky notes. Then, creating the book can be used as a culminating activity for the text. Students write in detail about the characters, setting, and plot as well as the author, important quotes, and about themselves. These projects can easily be displayed for students to recommend books to each other or hung in the hallway. You can also use the pieces in interactive notebooks if you prefer to use the project with another text later on.
