This making predictions lesson uses the Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA Method), and can be used with any book. Students learn WHY, HOW, AND WHEN to make predictions using the anchor chart. Then practice with the remaining materials. The teacher can also model first using a book of choice. (I chose Mr. Lincoln’s Way for my group.)

1) The teacher introduces predictions using the anchor chart either printed or projected.
2) Students record clues from the book (illustrations, title, table of contents, prior knowledge of the author’s work)
3) Then, the students creates the pocket book which will be used for sorting new predictions and checked predictions. Then, it is set aside as the student records 3 predictions.
4) The student reads 1/3 of the book. Checks predictions and makes 3 new predictions.
5) This process continues until the book is completed.
1) Anchor Chart
2) Pocket Book
3) Story Clues Organizer
4) Predictions Cards with directions
