Description
Blizzard of the Blue Moon by Mary Pope Osborne is a great choice for winter. This comprehension focused novel study is set up with before/during/after activities and vocabulary for each chapter. Each chapter focuses on a different comprehension skill, and you can use it with guided reading groups, literature circles/book clubs, or partner work.
BLIZZARD OF THE BLUE MOON UNIT SKILLS:
- making predictions
- visualizing
- problem and solution
- summarizing
- character traits
- question types
- citing text evidence
- author’s purpose
- making comparisons and connections
- and drawing conclusions.
HOW TEACHERS USE THE BLIZZARD OF THE BLUE MOON UNIT:
Group discussion is encouraged throughout the reading of the book. The unit would also work well with literature circles. It’s been tested in several classrooms and found to be easy to follow for parents and teaching assistants. An answer key is not included as some answers vary and group discussion fosters higher level thinking skills.

I was expecting more for $4 – it’s only 15 pages, and they are all in color! Blackline masters would have been appreciated. Some of the questions are much too simple for 4th grade – IMHO Some of the vocabulary words that are included – aren’t really vocabulary – but things that need to be discussed for building background and deeper knowledge…. maybe include a page of suggested topics for the teacher to discuss instead of include them as vocabulary for the children to look up and define.
