Hello there! I'm glad you're here!

Literacy is my passion.
Hello! I’m Carla, and welcome to my site! My goal with this site is to share teaching tips for all areas of literacy including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing for grades K-8. I love sharing resources with teachers, and it makes me happy to help take a little off the overflowing platters of teacher duties. I hope you’ll find my site helpful and my resources worthy of using with your students.

Here is what teachers are saying...

Takes a little time to prep, but, wow, what a fun and functional resource! My students loved using the summarizing paper bag book. It really helped them solidify this concept in a neat, creative way. Thank you for all you do!

Busy Me Plus Three
I have two students who struggle with reading. I needed something to help build their self-esteem, but I didn't want to reinvent the wheel either. This was perfect! We do a poem each week. Monday, we read through it together. After they each do a cold read for me, we highlight our struggling words. Then Tuesday-Thursday, we do the activities. On Friday, they read it once more for me, and we chart their improvement. Their self-esteem has grown so much. They love taking them home to read each week.

Leveling Your Classroom Library-Scan, Add, Store

For many teachers, the classroom library is a special place, and for reading specialists, it is THE key place for building reading motivation and routines. Keeping it student friendly yet organized can be a real challenge, and it's often tough to keep up with all of your books. In this post, I explain how I used an app from Book Source as well as Scholastic's Book Wizard to add levels…

Professional Reading Recommendations for Reading Specialists

The summer is the best time to catch up on your reading time, and it's also a great time to grow professionally too. In this post, I'd like to share a book I thoroughly enjoyed, Reading in the Wild by Donalyn Miller. Several months ago, I got the privilege of meeting Donalyn Miller at the VSRA conference.  It is easy to read and filled with practical advice on helping motivate…
