I'm a newbie over at Buy, Sell, Teach, but I'm gradually uploading products to give it a try. I appreciate that Buy, Sell, Teach has generously donated a $100 gift certificate to raffle off at the end of the hop to help us welcome you to our new stores. Each of us are sharing in the excitement with our own rafflecopter drawing too, so be sure to sign in before you move to the next stop. The winner from each drawing will be eligible for the big $100 gift certificate.
So this is stop #7. I welcome you to my blog, Comprehension Connection. I focus on all things reading, so I typically post about comprehension strategies, fluency, word work, and other lesson ideas. I decided for this hop to share a little St. Patty's day unit perfect for teaching character traits and motives. Have you heard of Tomie dePaola? Of course you have, and I expect many readers will be familiar with that silly guy, Jamie O'Rourke.
I really enjoyed using Jamie O'Rourke and the Big Potato last year with my fifth graders to model character traits, and I found that many of Tomie dePaola's other books have vivid characters too. Strega Nona and Big Anthony work well as follow up characters. I have a Strega Nona bundle available at Buy Sell Teach {here} You can take a chance at winning your own copy through my raffle.
If Buy, Sell, Teach is new to you, I hope you'll take a moment to check it out. Buy Sell Teach is an on-line teacher store that sells educational materials for grades preK-12 grade for all subject areas. The graphic below is linked to my store there.
I believe you're ready to visit my blogging buddy Krista at Teaching Momster to see what she has waiting for you.
Thanks for visiting today. I hope you enjoy the goodies we're sharing today and that you come back soon. Until next time...happy hopping!
I love reading the different versions of Strega Nona. One of my favorites is Strega Nona Meets Her Match. I have the students compare and contrast Strega Nona to Strega Amelia. Love Tomie dePaola books!
ReplyDeleteMe too! Thanks for dropping by Monica!
DeleteI love Jamie O'Rourke and the big potato! My second graders know that I love french fries, and we make a list together of all the things we could make out of the big potato and then they write about their favorite potato dish!
ReplyDeleteJennifer...you posted before I turned this unit to free. If you see this, please come back.
DeleteI like to read The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush before we paint.

Sorry hit send too soon,.. I love his Bill and Pete series... nothing better and the kids really enjoy them. I usually have them choose a location and have them write their own version of Bill and Pete do something... like Bill and Pete visit Mar Vista School... they really get a kick out of that!!

I love them too. I have a Bill and Pete bundle in my TPTs store you might like.
DeleteStrega Nona is one of my favorites! We make spaghetti and try it with sauce and without. We also do a writing project of what we'd like for that magic pasta pot to create instead of pasta. :o)

I love all his Christmas themed books: Merry Christmas, Strega Nona, The Legend of the Poinsettia, The Legend of Old Befana to name a few. I use these as part of my Christmas around the World activities as they explain a lot of traditions for the various countries.
ReplyDeleteI'm not familiar with these. I need to check them out! Thanks for dropping by.
DeleteThank you for starting the March Madness and sharing your hard work with other teachers!! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for dropping by.
DeleteI like The Legend of Indian Paintbrush because I like discussing the legend with the students. We can discuss where legends come from and why they are important. But, like most teachers, I love everything Tomie dePaola does. Thank you for your freebie and for participating in this Giveaway.
ReplyDeletePS I forgot to add that another one I love is the Legend of Bluebonnet, and The Legend of the Pointsetta
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great freebie. I am now your newest BST followers.
ReplyDeleteThanks for organizing Nancy!
DeleteI love all of the Strega Nona books. My favorite is Strega Nona Meets Her Match.
ReplyDeleteI love using these for mentor texts. What a genius writer!
DeleteThanks for dropping by Cecile.
ReplyDeleteFin M'coul is a favorite for St. Patrick's Day... and I love The Legend of the Poinsettia and Old Befana for enhancing our Holidays Around the World December studies. A new favorite, though, is Pancakes for Breakfast. It's wordless but perfect for teaching influencing and how-to writing. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by Laura. I love Fin M'coul too. My friend, Nancy, did a really nice unit for that book that I enjoy using.
DeleteI like Strega Nona...try to switch it up every year. See some other books listed above I am going to have to check out!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! Glad the comments helped you. :-)
DeleteI have never read any of them to my kids, so this is something I'll be checking out! That's for bringing my attention to it. Sounds like something the kids would really enjoy! Thanks for sharing!!!
ReplyDeleteOh definitely check them out. They are just so wonderful. Start with Jamie O'Rourke and the Big Potato and Jamie O'Rourke and the Pooka...both excellent. Then, move on to Strega Nona followed by Bill and Pete. Tomie dePaola's collection is deep!
