Tonight (Thursday), I asked my Facebook fans which Patriicia Polacco book is their favorite, and by a long shot, it was Thank You Mr. Falker! Why? Because inside, we all have a soft spot for struggling readers and because Patricia Polacco so eloquently makes us feel the sadness and frustration she had as a child in a classroom where the teachers missed that something was wrong. We love this book because Mr. Falker is the teacher we want to be, the one who is sensitive to the feelings of his/her students, observant about each child's strengths and weaknesses, and courageous enough to do what it takes to help each and every child succeed. We love knowing that children can overcome very challenging circumstances and go on to achieve. We want successes like Patricia's story. So, let's say today is Think About it Thursday. (well, technically it's Friday, but I haven't slept yet. :-) I think for "Think about it Thursday", we should consider how we reach those struggling students. How do we make them feel special? Are they Junkyard Junk or Junkyard Wonders? (another book you must read!) Perhaps, when we're relaxing on our snow days, it's good to pause for a moment and think about how we can make school special for struggling students. When we all get back into our routines, I hope we will reach out, make that child feel special and go the extra mile for him or her.
As I mentioned, this was a contest, and with a contest there has to be a winner. Tonight's winner is...
Mary Beth Reiman
Mary Beth chose Chicken Sunday as her favorite unit, and she's in luck. I just revised it two days ago. Here it is all prettied up and ready for her students. Congratulations Mary Beth! I hope you and your students have lots of fun using it in your classroom.
I will send you a message via Facebook to let you know, but you can send me a message if you read my blog entry.
If this is your first time visiting my blog, I hope you'll take a moment to look at past posts, collect a few freebies while you're visiting, and hit the Bloglovin button to get blog post updates. I'm trying hard to provide useful (and fun) information on my blog 4-5 times per week.
Now...I am off to bed. Thanks for joining in the Facebook fun tonight. Until next time, happy reading!
